Testosterone is a crucial hormone responsible for men’s energy, motivation, sex drive, muscle mass, etc.
In the last 50 years, the average male testosterone level has dropped by more than 1 percent yearly. Why is that?
I would argue that the modern man has low testosterone levels because of testosterone-killing-things in our everyday lifestyle. In this article, I will reveal 13 everyday things that kill testosterone levels you may want to watch out for.
The 13 Things Lowering Your Testosterone:
In the modern day, plastics are everywhere. Plastic are in clothes (polyester), bottled water and most everyday items.
Most plastics contain Bisphenol-A (BPA). BPA is an anti-androgen meaning it stops the normal effects of testosterone in the body. Many plastic wrappings say “BPA FREE.”
Don’t be misled by this. When manufacturers don’t use BPA in their plastic, they replace it with other testosterone-killing chemicals.
So, as a rule of thumb, If you want to optimize your testosterone, try to avoid getting plastic in your blood. Easier said than done.
Plastics are everywhere, but I recommend drinking out of a stainless steel water bottle and wearing polyester-free clothes.
I know it sounds crazy, right? Almost everyone in the world uses wifi and cellular services. Well turns out that WIFI and cellular service emit radiofrequency radiation (RF-EMR).
There have been many studies that prove that radiofrequency radiation can lower testosterone levels.
Now, of course, to live in the modern day, you need to use phones and computers. But here are the 5 most actionable statements to remember:
It is up to you how far you want to go, but just know that wifi and cell services lowers testosterone.
More than 90% of Americans get tap water from public water systems. This poses some risks for the general male populous because research shows that tap water may lower testosterone levels.
Most Global Public Water Systems contain Anthropogenic contaminants (EDCs). EDCs are endocrine disruptors that disrupt hormonal/testosterone production in the body.
I recommend getting a filtered water system that filters out Anthropogenic contaminants and fluoride.
Store receipts are a great way to document what you purchased and can ensure that a fair transaction is made. However, you might want to think twice next time you are handed a receipt.
Store receipts contains high levels of BPA (Bisphenol-A). BPA is an endocrine disrupter meaning it mimics estrogen production in the body. Simply said, store receipts lowers testosterone levels in the body.
I recommend always discarding store receipts when offered because they reduce testosterone and just take up space.
With sickness constantly going around, everyone wants to stay germ-free. However, research suggests that hand sanitizer may reduce testosterone levels.
A key ingredient in hand sanitizer is commonly triclosan. Triclosan is a chemical that can mess up thyroid function, disrupt testosterone levels, and promote problems associated with fertility.
I recommend staying away from hand sanitizer and sticking to old fash water-washing.
Smoking causes about 90% of all lung cancer deaths. But it gets worse. Smoking may also lower men’s testosterone levels.
Some people say that smoking increases testosterone levels. This is true in the very short term.
A study done on more than 3,000 men published in the International Journal of Andrology found that smoking increases testosterone.
However, in the long term, smoking disrupts the hormonal balance. With all the other negative health consequences of smoking, I advise you to avoid it.
Alcohol is the most consumed drug in America. Approximately 78% of people ages 12 and over reported drinking alcohol in their lifetime.
There are many negative side effects of Alcohol consumption. For example: high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, liver disease, and digestive problems.
Additionally, studies show that alcohol also lowers testosterone levels. Alcohol alters brain chemistry, ultimately leading to hormonal disruption and lower testosterone levels over time.
It is OK to drink occasionally, but remember that your testosterone levels suffer when you do.
Fragrances are seen in perfumes, colognes, deodorants, soaps, and other smell-based products.
Studies show that most fragrance chemicals, like styrene, can block testosterone activity in the blood. Many credible health sources have claimed that fragrances significantly lower testosterone levels in males.
Deodorant and soap are necessary if you don’t want to be viewed as stinky. But you can find natural deodorants and colognes that don’t lower testosterone. Also, if this isn’t possible, I suggest you limit your cologne usage.
It is always awesome to have great-styled hair. Many men turn to hair gel and styling products to try to turn their hair into a chick magnet. However, most hair styling products reduce testosterone levels in males.
These hair styling products have a chemical called phthalate known to be detrimental to sex hormones. Phthalate is a chemical that makes plastics more flexible. They are found in detergents, lubricating oils, raincoats, various soaps, shampoos, hair sprays, and nail polishes.
The CDC has issued many requests to make this chemical illegal for all its harmful health effects. So I recommend putting down the hair gel so that you can enjoy the fruits of high testosterone.
Fluoride is a chemical found in toothpaste, drinking water, and many soft drinks. Dentists love fluoride because fluoridated toothpaste strengthens the tooth enamel, making it more resistant to tooth decay. In contrast, the effects of fluoride can be very harmful.
An excess of fluoride has many harmful neurological side effects, causes high blood pressure, and causes low testosterone. Sodium fluoride affects testosterone biosynthesis by changing the steroidogenic pathway in TM3 Leydig cells. In simple words, exposure to fluoride lowers testosterone levels.
I recommend getting a fluoride-free toothpaste and fluoride water filter to optimize testosterone levels.
The first shampoo and conditioner were invented in the 1500s in India. In the modern day, shampoo and conditioner have peaked into the classic V05 13 in 1.
Shampoo and conditioners contain harmful chemicals such as Phthalates that diminish testosterone production.
Also, most shampoo bottles are made of plastic filled with endocrine disruptors that lower testosterone.
I recommend getting a completely natural bathroom kit to avoid these harmful chemicals. Sadly, it might be time to say goodbye to the 13 in 1.
Most American men work 9-5 jobs and spend most of the day sitting. Even those who don't work a 9-5 still spend a lot of time seated.
Recent studies have shown that sitting down for extended periods may lower testosterone levels. The science explained simply is that when you sit down for a while, your thighs start to warm up. Then, as a result, your thighs warm up your testicles to a high temperature.
This lowers your testosterone because, over time, high temperatures can degrade your testosterone levels.
Some ways to combat this are getting a stand-up desk or just trying to stand up occasionally.
Hot Showers, Hot Baths, Saunas, and Hot Tubs are very liked ways in our society to relax. The warm temperatures are perfect for muscles and help with recovery.
However, recent studies have shown that exposure to hot temperatures can significantly lower testosterone and sperm count. Oppositely, exposure to cold water can have a very positive effect on testosterone. Maybe it's time for the 30-day cold shower grind.
Personally, I find hot showers a hard thing to give up. So I don’t blame you for taking a warm shower here and there. Just know that your testosterone levels and fertility might be at risk when you go in the sauna, take a hot shower or go in the hot tub.
How extreme you want to get with this is up to you. But, when dealing with your own manhood, perhaps it is good to be intense. It is highly difficult (practically impossible) to completely eliminate all these testosterone-killing things from your life.
Therefore, I recommend trying your best but not over-obsessing if you miss a couple. If you want to eliminate some things on this list, check out my polyester detox, where I offer some crucial replacements.
